New Nordic collaboration on responsible AI in interaction design

Clemens Nylandsted Klokmose and Jens Emil Grønbæk join a new NordForsk-funded Nordic project to explore how AI is transforming design, and how to ensure digital services remain responsible, human-centred, and aligned with societal needs.

Can we trust artificial intelligence to design the digital services of the future? As AI technologies quickly evolve and become embedded into everyday tools, they are taking on tasks traditionally performed by human designers. A new Nordic research collaboration — RAID: Responsible AI in Interaction Design Practice — will explore how this transformation can happen in a way that remains ethical, human-centred, and beneficial to society.

Associate Professor Clemens Nylandsted Klokmose and Assistant Professor Jens Emil Grønbæk, have received funding from NordForsk to participate in the project. The initiative brings together leading experts in Human-Computer Interaction and Human-Centred AI from five universities across the Nordic region: the University of Bergen (project lead), Aarhus University, the IT University of Copenhagen, the University of Gothenburg, and Tampere University.

The RAID project investigates how AI is changing design practices — and how designers can continue to create interactive products that are usable, fair, and aligned with human needs and values. The project includes empirical research in real design settings, development of AI-powered design tools with responsible safeguards, and new teaching approaches to prepare the next generation of designers.

From the department, Clemens Nylandsted Klokmose will lead a work package examining generative user interfaces - interactive systems that can adapt continuously to changing needs and work practices. Jens Emil Grønbæk will co-lead research into participatory approaches that ensure designers and users remain in control of AI-driven design tools.

The project runs from 2026–2029.
