Human-Centered AI

Research Focus

Human-Centered AI (HCAI) develops artificial intelligence systems that amplify human capabilities rather than replace them. This field recognizes that AI's ultimate value lies not in autonomous decision-making, but in supporting human judgment, creativity, and collaboration. HCAI researchers design AI systems that are interpretable, controllable, and aligned with human values while remaining technically sophisticated and practically useful.

At Aarhus University, we apply Scandinavian participatory design traditions to AI development, creating what we term participatory AI (PAI). This approach involves stakeholders throughout the AI lifecycle: from problem formulation through deployment and evaluation. We focus on domains where human-AI collaboration creates genuine value: manufacturing workflows that combine worker expertise with predictive analytics, educational systems that adapt to individual learning styles, and creative tools that enhance rather than supplant artistic expression. Our work addresses fundamental questions about AI transparency, accountability, and democratic governance.

Social Impact

HCAI research addresses growing concerns about AI's role in society by ensuring these powerful technologies serve human flourishing. Our Participatory AI framework provides concrete methods for involving communities in AI system design, particularly important for applications affecting vulnerable populations. Current projects span workforce development (helping workers adapt to AI-augmented roles), educational equity (creating AI tutoring systems that respect diverse learning approaches), and democratic innovation (designing AI tools that support civic engagement rather than manipulation).
