Profile

I am Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Aarhus University and leader of the Space Ice Group. My research investigates how molecular complexity emerges and evolves in cosmic ices from molecular clouds to planetary systems, and how this chemical evolution may contribute to the molecular origins of life.

My work has helped establish that complex organic molecules can form in cold interstellar ices through non-diffusive chemistry. I initiated and led the first laboratory demonstration of non-energetic glycine formation under prestellar conditions, showing that amino-acid chemistry can begin before a star forms. More recently, my research has extended this picture to peptide-forming chemistry under astrophysical ice conditions.

Research

My research investigates how surface chemistry, radiation, thermal processing, shocks, and gas–ice exchange transform cosmic ices and determine which molecular signatures are inherited or chemically reset during star and planet formation. I use controlled laboratory experiments and spectroscopy spanning the vacuum ultraviolet to the terahertz regime to study reaction pathways, energetic processing, ice structure, trapping, desorption, optical properties, and molecular release. My experimental programme combines research at Aarhus University with coordinated campaigns at major European research infrastructures.

A central goal is to provide quantitative laboratory constraints for the interpretation of astronomical observations and space-mission data through reliable molecular measurements, optical constants, absorption cross sections, and reference spectra. I am developing quantitative space-ice metrology based on calibrated measurements, quantified uncertainties, reproducible protocols, and shared reference data. My long-term ambition is to understand how molecular complexity emerges and evolves in space, how it is inherited by planetary systems, and how this chemical evolution connects to the molecular origins of life on Earth.

Teaching activities

My teaching is research-led and focuses on developing independent scientific judgement, quantitative reasoning, and the ability to connect theory, experiment, modelling, and observations. At Bachelor level, I teach Subatomic Physics and Astrophysics and supervise projects and theses in astrophysics. At Master level, I am Course Coordinator for Stellar Evolution: From Interstellar Clouds to Supernovae and supervise research-based Individual Project in Physics projects.

I supervise students and early-career researchers from BSc through PhD and postdoctoral level, with an emphasis on clear expectations, regular feedback, and progressive development towards scientific independence.

As Head of the MSc Degree Programme in Physics, I contribute to curriculum development, course alignment, quality assurance, and progression from advanced coursework to independent research. My teaching practice is supported by a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice, Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, and formal training in PhD supervision.

Job responsibilities

I lead the scientific programme of the Space Ice Group, including research strategy, project development, international collaborations, and supervision of early-career researchers. I am Principal Investigator of the DFF-funded BRIDGE project, From Laboratory Ices to Astronomical Observations, and a Principal Investigator in the Danish National Research Foundation Centre of Excellence InterCat2.

I also serve as Head of the MSc Degree Programme in Physics at Aarhus University and as Laboratory Coordinator and Management Team member for the JWST Ice Age programme, coordinating laboratory support for Ice Age and selected follow-up programmes.
