Professor Susanne Bødker receives the Suffrage Science Award in Mathematics and Computing

Last week, Professor Susanne Bødker visited the University of Oxford to receive the prestigious Suffrage Science Award in Mathematics and Computing, recognising her pioneering contributions to human–computer interaction (HCI) and collaborative technologies.

The Suffrage Science Awards celebrate outstanding women in science, engineering and computing. In the mathematics and computing category, only five researchers in computing and five in mathematics are honoured each award cycle. What makes the scheme unique is that each award is passed on from one recipient to another, creating an international “family tree” of women who recognise and celebrate each other’s impact.

Susanne received the award from Professor Wendy Mackay, another leading HCI researcher and honorary doctor at Aarhus University. The award includes a handcrafted heirloom brooch, Pattern of Thought by Veronika Fábián, made from gold punched tape – a nod to the history of computing. The encoded pattern references suffragette slogans including “Deeds not words”, “Courage Constancy Success” and “Through thick & thin we n’er give in.”

Susanne Bødker is internationally recognised for her foundational work in HCI, computer-supported cooperative work and participatory design. Over decades, her research has shaped both theory and practice in the field and influenced generations of students and researchers at Aarhus University and worldwide. In 2024, she also received the ACM SIGCHI Lifetime Research Award.

Congratulation Susanne on another remarkable and well-deserved honour.
