Abstract: We give some highlights of the historical development of
compiler technology 1950-1965 and its co-evolution with programming
languages and hardware. Most emphasis is on early developments and
the different approaches taken by US and European projects, with some
extra attention to the Nordic countries.
We will relate some of the technology to contemporary societal goals,
for instance object-oriented programming's roots in the early
Norwegian nuclear programme.
