The vision of the project is to improve patient flow and hospital efficiency by novel hospital logistics. These will be based on adaptive and dynamic planning algorithms combining real-time positioning of mobile entities, task scheduling and resource management. The project will develop an industrial prototype system that provides dynamic scheduling capabilities in an unobstructive manner to users via interfaces on mobile devices, wall-displays, or stationary PCs wherever the user is and needs information and overview of tasks and resources. A logistics system for hospitals needs to be highly flexible to situations requiring quick and radical changes of focus and priority towards patients and equipment. PosLogistics will build on developments within hospital and emergency logistics, integrate environment-optimized positioning technology, and – based on the latter – provide novel and highly adaptive logistics and planning algorithms. The vision here is that complex re-scheduling for personnel will happen and be communicated seamlessly, e.g. on mobile devices in real-time, similar to what a modern GPS car navigation device provides, when the driver leaves the planned route: after a gentle notification the route or schedule is automatically changed to a new optimal one. PosLogistics will integrate and enhance positioning technologies that do not interfere with hospital equipment, for instance WiFi positioning technology enhanced with accelerometers for motion detection.
