AU student wins best Computer Science Master Thesis

Congratulations to Anders Dalskov on winning “Dansk Selskab for Datalogi” best master thesis award for his thesis entitled:” End-to-End Encrypted Cloud Storage: A security analysis of SpiderOak ONE”.

- It was really unexpected. I didn’t know that there was someone there had nominated my thesis for the award. I think the award shows, that there is someone else who appreciate my thesis, and that’s what I’m most happy about, says Anders Dalskov.

In the thesis, Anders Dalskov discovered that SpiderOak ONE -  previously praised by Edward Snowden - had gaps in their security. SpiderOak ONE is different from other cloud services like iCloud and Dropbox as they encrypt data, and it’s not possible for them or any other to access your files.

- We found a total of four different security holes at SpiderOak ONE, which we would terminate as worrying: Two different ways in which the server could acquire the user's password and thus full access to his files and additional two security holes, which otherwise impair the security of user files. We contacted the SpiderOak people around our findings, and subsequently, they updated SpiderOak ONE, says Anders Dalskov.

Today, Anders Dalskov is a PhD student in the cryptography and security group at Department of Computer Science at Aarhus University.
