About

I am a Professor at Aarhus University where I teach and research at the intersection of Computer Graphics, Vision, and Human-Computer Interaction (Visual Computing). I am also an honorary Professor at the University of Otago, New Zealand. My long term interests are in all forms of Mixed-, Extended-, Augmented- and Virtual Realities. Previous to joining Aarhus University, I was a Professor at University of Otago (New Zealand) where I founded and co-led the HCI group. I play an active role in the international research community and, among other service roles, served as General chair for IEEE VR 2022 (Christchurch/Online) and IEEE VR 2023 (Shanghai) but I am also a frequent member of the organising or program commmittee for ACM CHI/UIST/TOCHI, IEEE VR/ISMAR/TVCG.

During my career, my team's work has received best paper awards or nominations/honourable mentions at premier events such as IEEE VR, ACM CHI, IEEE ISMAR and haven been highlighted among the best PhD thesis by the IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Community (IEEE VGTC). I have won an "Early Career Award for Distinction in Research" from the University of Otago in 2017 and was a finalist for the Supervisor of the Year award in 2016. My work has been supported by the European Research Council, MBIE Endeavour Research program (NZ), Royal Society New Zealand Marsden Fund, and the National Science Challenge but I also received support from Snap Inc., Qualcomm, Lumus, Internet NZ, and Nokia.

Research

My research is generally within Visual Computing but I am specifically interested in interactive and immtersive technologies such as Augmented and Virtual Reality. Over the years several research themes emerged. Below some work from the recent years:

Augmented Vision

Traditional glasses used fixed optics usually for correcting refractive errors. In this theme we explore vision augmentations that use computational optics and approaches from visual computing to rethink the design of glasses while extending their application to exciting new areas.

Design Space for Vision Augmentation

"Design Space for Vision Augmentation" ACM CHI 2024

Visual Noise Cancellation

"Visual Noise Cancellation" ACM TOCHI/CHI 2024

Seeing Colours

"Compensating Colour Vision Deficiency" ACM TOCHI/CHI 2022

Virtual Tourism and Mobile Telepresence

Existing forms of tourism face serveral challenges but also excludes people who are unable to travel. In this project, we implement and explore telepresence technolgies that allow to virtually travel to distant places. Imagine, you can travel to and immersive yourself with friends in a remote environment, see different cultures and places but eventually still in your own bed.

VirtualVoyage

Mixed Reality Lightfields

Telepresence using "Mixed Reality Lightfields"CHI 2020

Mobile Telepresence using "Mobileportation" ACM IMWUT 2020

Perception and Attention in XR

Create effective XR experiences requires to address perceptual issues. Using insights the characteristics of the human-visual system, we explore how to reduce current perceptual issues (e.g. visual clutter) or optimise rendering or guidance techniques.

Flicker Augmentation

Eye-Perspective View Management ACM CHI 2023

Saliency Modulation

Saliency Modulation with AR Glasses ACM UIST 2023

Coherent Mixed Reality

For many envisioned Mixed Reality applications it is required that the information is visually indistiguishable from reality, yet we are far from being able to deliver this. In this theme, we are working towards indistinguishable mixed-reality experiences using novel hardware and software prototypes that use techniques from machine learning with applications that include the entertainment and movie industry

Layered Display

Team and Mentoring

I strongly believe that working on challenging research problems is a great way to learn and progress in our field. Over the last 12 years, I was fortunate enough that alot of people agreed and we built a diverse team and work with many talented people including Bachelor, Master, PhD, and PostDoc's. Most of my Master students published with me at international venues, and the work together with my PhD students and PostDocs has repeatedly been highlighted or won prices at the key events in the field. Several former team members moved on to become succesfull PostDocs or Academics on their own. I also throughly enjoy doing my small contribution to help the future leaders in our discipline by serving as mentor (e.g. doctoral consortiums at IEEE VR or IEEE ISMAR), representing emerging career academics, or giving talks/panels on how to address the challenges of an academic (e.g. IEEE Future Faculty Forum at IEEE VR).

Studying at Aarhus Univerity

The city of Aarhus has often been named as one of the best places to live and has apparently the happiest people. Furthermore, Aarhus University is a great place to study, offers a very good research environment, and we do our best in offering interesting thesis and research topics as well as good supervision. Please feel free to contact me if you are interested to learn more about open positions (Interns/Master/PhD/PostDoc) but please include a little bit about yourself (e.g. your background, degrees, CV) and let me know something about your research interests. While I am usually very responsive, I do not guarantee to reply to emails that look like random enquiries. I also have a good overview about funding opportunities and scholarhship options. If you are curious what Aarhus has to offer besides a great research and study environment better check the video below:
