An XACT transformation manipulates XML templates:

• Well-formed XML fragments
• Containing named gaps (or holes)
• Immutable (= value-based)

Construction:

• The gaps of an XML template are plugged with values

Deconstruction:

• Navigation using XPath expressions
• The addressed fragments are selected or "gapified"
