Enhancing 3D user interfaces with haptic feedback

In this talk, Ernst will provide an overview of his work in the area of 3D user interfaces (3DUIs) for virtual and augmented reality. In particular, the talk will focus on extending 3DUIs with haptic feedback to optimize performance and improve situation awareness in 3D applications. A number of novel haptic technologies will be presented that not only focus on the user’s hands, but also other body parts like the head and feet. Following, Ernst will present how haptics can be applied to enhance 3D navigation in virtual reality, and view management for augmented reality. When discussing navigation, he will address typical problems such as the lack of self-motion cues, motion sickness, and limited spatial awareness, and shows how novel interfaces can potentially overcome these problems. Thereby, a close focus is on users who physically cannot move around freely due to space restrictions. With respect to view management – which regards the layout/presentation of augmentations - current head-worn devices often suffer from their limited field of view. Here, perceptual issues will be discussed, and how they affect performance, for example during visual search. Following, technical solutions will be offered to improve view management, especially reflecting the role of cues in the periphery of the visual system. Finally, interwoven in the talk various outlooks will provide insights in future directions of his research.
