The Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation has awarded a major EliteForsk (Elite Research) prize to Professor Lars Arge, Department of Computer Science. This prestigious award amounts to DKK 1.2 million (approximately EUR 160,000). Professor Arge is Director of the Danish National Research Foundation’s Centre for MAssive Data ALGOrithmics (MADALGO), which opened in 2007 at the Department of Computer Science, Aarhus University.
The major EliteForsk prize is awarded to outstanding young researchers (under 45 years of age) who are in the top class internationally. Part of the award (DKK 200,000) is considered a personal prize of honour, but the remaining DKK 1 million must be used for research activities. Professor Arge is one of five researchers altogether who were awarded EliteForsk prizes at a ceremony at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek on Wednesday 27 January 2010.
In the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation’s argumentation for awarding the prize to Professor Arge, it says:
Lars Arge belongs to the absolute elite in his field, which is the design of combinatorial algorithms. His research aims at enabling more suitable handling of the enormous amounts of data encountered in many areas via databases and information systems. In addition to carrying out theoretical work, he contributes with program libraries for solving practical issues. This work takes place in collaboration with companies, and is supported by grants from the Danish Council for Strategic Research and the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation.
Professor Arge has achieved top international recognition and has established a strong international network. He has published 75 articles in international journals and proceedings from leading international conferences. Other activities include being Chair of the International Colloquium on Automata, Languages and Programming (ICALP), which is one of the most prestigious European computer science conferences. His impact is reflected in more than 2,500 citations.
Professor Arge is Director of the Centre for MAssive Data ALGOrithmics (MADALGO), which was established with a grant from the Danish National Research Foundation in 2007. In 2004, he was appointed a professorship with special responsibilities at the Department of Computer Science on the basis of an Ole Rømer Scholarship from the Danish Council for Independent Research | Natural Sciences (FNU).
