Every year Technical University Eindhoven (TU/e) confer one honorary doctorate. This year the degree will be conferred on Lars Arge who is a Professor of Computer Science at Aarhus University and Director of the Danish National Research Foundation Center for Massive Data Algorithmics (MADALGO). It is only the second time a Dane is conferred such a degree from TU/e, the first being Professor Jens K. Nørskov from Stanford University in 2006.

In the motivation for conferring the degree the Doctorates Board highlights Lars Arges's outstanding achievements in the theoretical foundations of I/O-efficient algorithms, making him a leading expert worldwide, as well as his activities in creating infrastructure for fundamental algorithmic massive-data research and its applications.

"I'm obviously extremely honored to receive this recognition, and look forward to continue my strong collaboration with Eindhoven researchers," says Lars Arge.

Following the award ceremony on April 20 in Eindhoven, the Data Science Center Eindhoven (DSC/e) at TU/e will on April 21 organize a symposium with the title "Facets of Data Analytics" in honor of Lars Arge. The symposium will feature lectures by three prominent researchers from the DSC/e who will showcase some of the research from the DSC/e, followed by a lecture by Lars Arge about his work.

About Lars Arge:

The research interests of Lars Arge lie in the area of algorithms and data structures with focus on memory-hierarchy efficient algorithms, especially I/O-efficient algorithms for problems involving massive datasets (big data).

Lars Arge obtained his PhD from Aarhus University in 1996, and spend the following years as faculty at Duke University in the US before returned to Denmark in 2004. Since 2007 he has been the Director of the Danish National Research Foundation Center for Massive Data Algorithmics (MADALGO). Lars Arge is a recipient of the Danish Elite Research ("EliteForsk") award, a Fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery, and an elected member of the Royal Danish Academy of Science and Letters and the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences. He currently serves as the Secretary General of the Royal Danish Academy of Science and Letters, as well as the chairman of the Danish Council for Independent Research, Natural Sciences.

Apart from his scientific career, Lars Arge is the co-founder and chairman of the company Scalable Algorithmics (SCALGO) that markets software and services in connection with efficient processing of big terrain data in general and flood risk analysis in particular.
