Mentor Guide

As a PhD student at the Department of Computer Science you might be asked to act as a mentor for some of our new PhD students. Below is a guide to help you on your way.

Pick up on arrival

  • The student is picked up on arrival, gets his keys from IC if she/he has applied for temporary housing, and is followed to the department or his/her address.
  • Give the student a guided tour of the department.

Visit One Stop Shop ( EU citizens)

  • At One Stop Shop you can take care of tax matters, CPR number and work and residence permit, so the student should go there the first-coming Wednesday between 14-16 after her/his arrival.
  • Here the student can apply for CPR number, Tax card and Certificate of Registration (EU citizens). (inform Jan Frederiksen, janfre@cs.au.dk, about the CPR number)

NON-EU Citizens

Go to Borgerservice (Rådhuset) to get a CPR no.

Bank

  • Usually our foreign students open a bank account in Danske Bank or Nordea which are both close to the department.
  • Master card and Dankort are easy to get - harder to get a Visa card. Good idea to bring a copy of your letter of employment

At the University

At Department of Computer Science take the student on a "tour" round the whole department:

    • His/her office
    • Meet Anders and Ann, student's supervisor + research group staff
    • Coffee Room (tell them about the coffee and fruit-arrangement)
    • The IT Library in Nygaard
    • The Canteens in Incuba Science Park and in Nygaard
    • Xerox-machines, office supplies
    • Help Desk (Hopper 0) to get an email account (inform Jan Frederiksen, janfre@cs.au.dk about the username so that the PhD student are added to the different mail aliases)
    • Information office where the student can get a  key and apply for a card to acces IT Parken.

International Student Centre (ISC)

  • Now a part of Studenterhus Århus, which is a great place to meet other foreign students, go to concerts and a lot of other things. You visit the International Student Centre to register the student. The "Staff & Post Grad Club" is the relevant one for our students.
  • Membership of ISC is 150 DKK per year. The students have to pay this themselves.
